Joël Marosi⎢cello

Joel Marosi, born in Zurich, pursued his musical studies under renowned mentors, including Nancy Chumachenco in Zurich, Heinrich Schiff in Basel, Claus Kanngiesser in Cologne, and Arto Noras at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. In 1996, he earned distinguished degrees in both solo performance and chamber music. Marosi has attended masterclasses with legendary musicians such as Janos Starker, Yo Yo Ma, Harvey Shapiro, David Geringas, and Ralph Kirschbaum, and has garnered numerous national and international competition awards, including honors from Lausanne (1991), the Berlin Mendelssohn Competition (1992), and Osaka (1996).

Marosi regularly serves as principal cellist with Camerata Bern and Camerata Salzburg and has also been a guest principal for prestigious orchestras, including the DSO Berlin and the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester. From 2000 to 2003, he was the principal cellist of the Sinfonieorchester Basel, and since 2005, he has held the same position with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. In 2019, he also became the principal cellist of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra.

As a soloist, Marosi has performed with leading orchestras such as the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Prague Chamber Orchestra, Göttinger Sinfonieorchester, the Hannoversche Orchestervereinigung, Musikkollegium Winterthur, and the Athens State Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with esteemed conductors like Ton Koopman, Heinrich Schiff, Christoph Mueller, Christian Zacharias, Hannu Lintu, Thomas Zehetmair, Mario Venzago, and Loukas Karytinos.

A devoted chamber musician, Marosi has performed alongside celebrated artists, including Gabor Takacs, Ursula Holliger, Jürg Dähler, Irene Abrigo, Dimitri Ashkenazy, Ilya Gringolts, Davide Bandieri, Li Wei Qin, Isabelle van Keulen, Renaud Capuçon, James Ehnes, and Pablo Sainz-Villegas. He is a founding member of the Zurich Piano Trio, which debuted at Carnegie Hall in 1997 by invitation from Isaac Stern and has since enjoyed a thriving international career. From 2018 to 2023, Marosi was a member of the Swiss Piano Trio, contributing to its more than 20-year legacy of international success.

Marosi is an active recording artist with a diverse discography on labels such as Claves, Audite, Harmonia Mundi, Warner Music Korea, and Prospero Classical. His most recent release features the complete works for cello and piano by Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, performed with pianist Esther Walker. The album, produced by First Hand Records in London in 2021, has received critical acclaim worldwide.

In addition to his performance career, Marosi frequently conducts masterclasses across Europe and Asia. He held an interim professorship in chamber music at the Music Academy Geneva-Neuchâtel from 2019 to 2021. In 2023, he began a new collaboration with the Underground Youth Orchestra in Athens, which includes regular masterclasses and coaching projects. That same year, Marosi was appointed Professor of Cello at the Music University of Lucerne.
